FarFaria - An App Review

I've been sitting on the app FarFaria for a few months now. In between family and school beginning, I never had a chance to look at it but it's never been too FAR (haha - see what I did there) from my mind.  ;-)  I'm so glad that I finally did sit down and check it out.  My 3 year old daughter can't seem to get enough of it!

In case you haven't heard of it, FarFaria is an ebook app for children with hundreds of books for them to choose from to read.  You have the option to pay for the year (only $39.99) or by the month ($4.99).  They also have an amazing limited time offer going on right now - only $49.99 for LIFE!!!  Well worth the money if you ask me.  But let me explain why.

What makes this app so fabulous is the ability for children to follow along as the book is read aloud to them.....from the app!  That's right! My 3 year old was able to easily use the app, choose a book and click on "Auto play" and the book would be read to her.  How awesome is that?  We can even put a certain book in our favorites for her to access again later on.  In addition, the books show a reading level to make it simple to pick books that are right for her.

This would be perfect for teachers to use in a center in the younger grades or for a parent who is looking for an app related to books for their child.

I'm excited to be partnering up with FarFaria and to be able to give away a 3-month subscription to this app.  This will allow you to check it out and see what a great addition it could be in your classroom or home.

How would you use this app?

Katie

Fight for Your Write

It's no secret that the heart of a teacher is probably made up of sticky notes, colorful crayons & markers, whiteout tape, super sharp pencils, and a blast of glitter. We LOVE school supplies.  So when I was contacted by Bic to see if I would like to receive some of their supplies and write about their newest campaign, I of course said YES!  In addition to their awesome supplies they also have an awesome and inspiring campaign going on right now called "Fight for Your Write".  The goal - to keep encouraging students to WRITE....with their hands!  The art of handwriting is slowly being lost in this day and age of digital technology.  But isn't it still important?

"Writing is an important vehicle for communication
because it distinguishes us and promotes individuality."

"Writing is also an important learning tool for children. Writing helps kids
become better readers, boosts their confidence and sparks their creativity."

These two statements are from the Bic's - Fight for Your Write site. And I agree wholeheartedly.  After all, when I first think of even just the 'act' of handwriting, I immediately think of my students. I can tell whose paper is whose simply by looking at their unique handwriting.  Even in the digital world, we are SURROUNDED by handwriting aka fonts. No longer does Times New Roman fit all the needs of a person. Instead, people like Kimberly Geswein (an amazing font creator) can take someone's unique handwriting and create it into a font used by millions.

If we move past just the act of handwriting, we then enter into the world of what we can do with the power of writing. It brings me back to an activity that I did with my class.  There was a school district in another part of the country that decided that their high school students were "too busy" to recite the Pledge of Allegiance anymore.  They just don't have time in their jam packed day.  I showed my students the video of veterans who went to the school board meeting to plead with them to put it back into the school day.  My students were very touched by the video and asked what could they do to help?  I put the question back on them...  After some brainstorming, it was decided that they would write the school board letters imploring them to put the Pledge of Allegiance back into the high school schedule.  I was so proud of them!  They offered suggestions on how they could make this work and asked the school board to think of the veterans.  One student was concerned that their letters wouldn't be read, but another one said it didn't matter.  His comment was "Just knowing we took the time to write on how we feel about this is good enough for me."  :-)  Yep....proud teacher moment.

This year I'm going to encourage my kids to use the power of their writing again. We will find causes that are near and dear to them.  Take time to write letters of appreciate to people and companies.  Rediscover the lost art of sending a thank you letter.  The options are limitless.

And of course, I will do this using my Bic supplies!! hahaha  Their colorful selection of tools is exactly what will help begin the motivation to accomplish our writing goals.  I know from my experience with students that if I give them the opportunity to write in color, their desire increases dramatically.  Worried about mistakes with using tools other than pencil?  Fear not, Bic has white out tape that is easy and mess free to use.  They sent me a variety of tools to use but here are my top three favorites.

1.  The Magic Markers:  These are great for using on your whiteboard. My favorite part? When I erased it didn't leave a residue of color.
2.  Wite-Out: I LOVE white-out tape. So much easier to use then traditional liquid white-out.  And I'm not afraid to hand it over to my students to use.  Plus it doesn't bunch up like other brands I've used.
3.  The multi-color ink pens. I LOVED THESE PENS AS A KID! And they are still awesome. They are going to be perfect for our editing sessions. With all four colors at hand, the students will be able to quickly click from one color to the next to mark up punctuation, capitalization, spelling and grammar.

Guess what?! Because Bic also knows how much a teacher loves school supplies, they have agreed to send you a package of their supplies too.  Head on down below and enter to win a Back to School supply package from Bic yourself. :-)

Whatcha Wearing - Back To School Teacher Style Linky

When Marie over at The Hands On Teacher in First asked who else was excited to pick out their back to school outfit, I was one of the first to say, "Me, me, me!!!"  Like I mentioned in a previous post a couple of weeks ago about the clothing goodies I found, having two little girls makes it hard for me to spend money on myself.  But every teacher needs a great outfit for the first day....right?

The fabulous dress I found and talked about in my previous post.

But, I'm not one to stop at just the outfit.  In addition to clothing, there is one accessory that is JUST AS IMPORTANT, IF NOT MORE SO.  And that my friends is shoes! You know what I'm talking about, right?!?!? We are standing on our feet close to 6+ hours a day.  At the end of just one hour my feet are killing me, yet alone an entire day. I'm one of those teachers who would start the first 30 minutes in heels and then kick them off under my desk (with the collection of other heels that were discarded) and slip on some more comfortable shoes.

However, it's important that the shoes I DO slip on are not only comfortable but also professional looking....  And let me tell you, I have found that shoe!  Well, to be more honest, a co-worker of mine, our amazing third grade teacher, found that shoe and shared it with all of us at work and within a few weeks, I would dare say almost every teacher on our staff was sporting a pair of these shoes.  And we were in LOVE.

At this point you must be asking yourself, "Well Katie, what shoes are they?"  Well let me show you.....they are these shoes. (I have the red pair!)

Picture from http://pinterest.com/tieks

They are called Tieks and never in my entire life, have I come across a ballet slipper that is so unbelievably comfortable that you almost forget you are wearing shoes.  And I'm not kidding.  These are not your typical ballet shoes.  They are designed in such a way, that you can literally fold them in half and throw them into your purse.  Now, I'm not going to lie.  They aren't cheap.  But my mom always told me, you get what you pay for and honestly when it comes to shoes, I DO BELIEVE THAT!  I've worn shoes that I've regretted spending even a single dime on but these are not one of them.

When you buy a pair of Tieks, you aren't just buying the shoe.  You are buying a complete package. Their attention to detail in even just the box they arrive in is beautiful.  And not only does Tieks offer comfortable shoes, but they offer them in a variety of colors and designs, which makes them so much more fun!  On top of all of that, they know what good customer service is all about.  I had ordered my mom a pair of these shoes for Mother's Day (she's a retired nurse so she appreciates a good comfortable shoe too) but I had ordered the wrong size.  When the shoe came in, my mom called Tieks and they told her to hold onto the shoe and they would send the correct size and to just mail the ones she was returning in the box they were sending with prepaid postage. Say what?!? Most places you have to pay to send things back. Plus, all the shoes come with these amazing bows - which I love to have my young daughter rock in her hair. haha

Kaidyn rocking the Tieks' bow from my shoe box. :-)

I could go on and on about how amazing these shoes are! But I really want to get to some even more exciting news - Tieks has so generously offered to give one of my readers a $100 gift card to their boutique!!!  When I contacted them, I was told that many of the staff members have parents who were teachers and really appreciated us and what we do.  How sweet!!  :-)

So now you have an opportunity to own a pair of these fabulous shoes yourself.  I'm so honored and excited to be teaming up with this fabulous company for this giveaway! So go ahead, check out their site at www.tieks.com and pick out the shoe you want to get when you win this gift card. ;-)

In addition to the $100 Tieks gift card, I am also giving away my Mega Poster Bundle from my TpT store.  Happy Back to School time!

Teacher Appreciation Week 2013

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
Sorry I've been away from my blog for so long. But I have two really good reasons....I swear.  I've been on maternity leave since March 5.  We thought my daughter was going to make an early appearance from her due of 3/10/13.  However, she fooled us all and didn't come until 3/18/13.  So please welcome my newest daughter Kaidyn Leona Lyon. :-)  Her older sister, Kenzie, who is 22 months old has been a big help to me while I've been on leave.  When not actually assisting me, she is keeping me amused with her antics.  Needless to say, I've been quite busy.....and tired.

Kaidyn Leona - 3/18/13

Kenzie Marie - 7/8/11

BUT not so tired I would forget about the one week of the year in which teachers are recognized nationally.  Here it is - TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK 2013!  I love this week. It's always fun seeing companies and people alike honoring teachers for all the hard work they do.  Here are just a few I've seen:

1. Lakeshore Learning Materials has a giveaway daily this week.  Enter them here.
2. Chipolte is offering a buy one get one free on Tuesday after 4pm. I love Chipolte. You just need to make sure you bring your teacher ID.
3.  Teachers Pay Teachers is having a two day sale and depending on the store you can save up to 28%.  (My store is 28% off - take a look)
4.  Teachers Notebook is also having a sale. And while there, you can enter to win a $100 gift card to Oriental Trading every day!  Check it out. Who doesn't like to win $100 to that store?!? (My store is on sale there too!)
5.  One of my favorite stores, New York and Company is offering 30% off for Teachers on May 8 in-stores.
6. Donor Choose is matching gifts if you enter the code "Treat" when donating to a project.
7.  Horace Mann is giving away a summer relaxation kit.  It includes some awesome prizes - check it out here.

These are just a few I know about.....do you know of any more?  Post them below in the comments.

While I've been on leave, I've also been a baking machine. Cookies, cakes, lemon bars (we have a lemon tree in our backyard), you name it I've been making it.  It's amazing I'm not 100 lbs heavier than when I started this leave of absence.  However, in all my baking I came across the best recipe ever! And the best part, there is no baking involved. I wish I remembered where I got the recipe but I don't.  But I must simply share with you all!  If you love or even like Reeses Peanut Butter cups, you'll love these!

To make these Knock-Off Peanut Butter Cups you'll need the following:

  • 3 cups of corn flakes - crushed (I use knock off corn flakes)
  • 1 cup of crunch peanut butter (I've used regular too)
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup white corn syrup
  • 6 ounces of chocolate chips (I find the milk chocolate chips are the best!)
  1. Heat the peanut butter, sugar and corn syrup on low heat to melt.
  2. Stir in the corn flakes. Mix together well.
  3. Pat into an 8x10 pan that has been greased well.
  4. Melt the chocolate chips over low heat.
  5. Spread the melted chocolate on top of the corn flake mixture.
  6. Let cool. (I put my in the refrigerator to make this process go faster)
  7. Cut into square and ENJOY!
I'd make these all for you if I could but since I can't I'll do something else for you.  As a fellow teacher, I simply appreciate all you do! To show this, I'm giving away a $10 TpT gift certificate tomorrow (just in time for the sale!).  The giveaway ends tonight at midnight so be sure to enter my giveaway using the Rafflecopter below.

Good luck and thanks for all you do!

Quadrilateral project with the Geoboard app (and a AWESOME Giveaway!)

In math class my students are learning how to identify different types of quadrilaterals and the characteristics that make them all up.  In order to assist them, I created this little handout which they put in their math notebook so they have an easy reference.

Since we have the iPads, I also created a little Quadrilateral booklet project for them to work on.  The project requires the students to create the shapes using the Geoboard app AND be able to identify these shapes in real life and explain how they are use. The students were thrilled to be able to play with the Geoboard app as we've had it on our iPads for sometime but never used it.  Just like if they were using real Geoboards, they have the ability to pick different color rubber bands but unlike the real Geoboards they can also fill in their shapes.  Best part about this app......it's FREE!

The possibilities for using it are practically endless!  Students can represents fractions, figure out area and perimeter, and so on.  It's really easy to use too.  A win win all around.

You can get a copy of both my free handout and booklet project at my store.  Hopefully your students will enjoy it as much as mine are!

Also, in case you haven't heard or seen it already, my friend, Krystal Mills, over at Lessons from the Middle is having her First Bloggy Birthday!  A bunch of us fellow bloggers got together and donated TONS of products for her to give away ranging in all grade levels.  Head over and enter to win some awesome prize packs whose total worth IS $500!
And don't forget to download the Geoboard App for some virtual rubberband fun! ;-)
Enjoy!

Market Monday: Shameless Self-Promotion

I typically don't promote the products I create and sell on my blog.  I try to keep my posts about ideas that you can take back to your classroom and occasionally will mention you can accomplish the idea with a product I created (or not).  :-)

However, today I'm going to do a bit of shameless self-promotion coupled with my very first giveaway EVER!!!!  I'd like to invite you to check out my TpT store and see what I have there. Perhaps you'll find something useful for your class.  And to help you out, I'm giving away a $10 TpT gift certificate.  Just enter the giveaway below.  Of course it's not mandatory for you to spend your winnings at my store - there are so many amazing products listed on TpT from other teachers that I encourage you to browse away.

Good luck to all who enter!  The giveaway will go on until Monday next week.  And thank you for taking the time to read my blog.  It's because of you, the readers, that I continue to share.  :-)
